THE Republic of Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Samoa, as its new ambassador presented his credentials to the country’s Head of State.
Byung-ha Chung presented his Letter of Credence to Samoa’s Head of State, Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, during a ceremony at the official residence in Vailele.
The ceremony formally accredited Chung as the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Samoa.
In his remarks, Chung reaffirmed Korea’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Samoa, which established diplomatic relations with Korea on September 15, 1972.
He highlighted the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 and the importance of continued cooperation to address shared challenges, including climate change.
Chung also emphasised the need to advance regional priorities under the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
Tuimalealiifano welcomed Chung as the new ambassador and reaffirmed Samoa’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through Korea-Pacific cooperation.
He highlighted the importance of people-to-people connections and cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly climate change and sustainable development.
Chung joined Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993 and has held various diplomatic and senior leadership positions, including Director-General for International Organisations and Ambassador to Kuwait.
He previously served in diplomatic postings in the United States, Iran and Kuwait.
Chung is scheduled to meet Samoa’s Prime Minister and relevant Cabinet ministers before returning to Wellington on October 17.
