FIJI has pledged USD$10 million to the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF), as Pacific leaders and international partners step up efforts to secure climate financing ahead of COP31.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced the contribution during the high-level event, Turning Climate Finance into Community Resilience, at the Pacific Pre-COP31 meetings in Nadi.

Denmark also pledged USD$2.3 million, while the Netherlands committed a further USD$1 million to support the facility’s operationalisation.

The latest commitments bring total pledges to the PRF to USD$190 million, towards an initial capitalisation target of USD$500 million and a longer-term goal of USD$1.5 billion.

Established by Pacific Islands Forum members, the facility aims to provide accessible, predictable and sustainable financing for climate and disaster resilience, with regional priorities and decision-making at its centre.

Pacific Islands Forum leaders reaffirmed the PRF as the region’s pre-eminent climate investment priority at their annual meeting in Palau in September.

Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General Baron Divavesi Waqa welcomed the new contributions, saying the facility represented Pacific-led action on climate change.

“The Pacific has long been at the forefront of the global climate agenda, not simply calling for action, but advancing Pacific-led solutions,” Waqa said.

“The Pacific Resilience Facility is a clear expression of that leadership, putting Pacific priorities, Pacific ownership, and Pacific solutions at the heart of building a more resilient region.”

He also acknowledged the continued leadership of Forum leaders and members, alongside support from international partners.

The PRF is intended to help Pacific communities access financing for climate and disaster resilience, particularly as the region faces growing climate-related risks.

With COP31 approaching, the facility is expected to help translate global climate commitments into practical support for Pacific communities.
