VANUATU has received $NZD155,000 ($VT11 million) from China to support recovery efforts following volcanic activity on Ambae and a recent ferry disaster.
Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat received the donation from China’s top diplomat Li Manggang in Port Vila on Wednesday night.
Napat said the assistance demonstrated China’s support for Vanuatu during a difficult period.
“China’s support at such a critical time demonstrates true friendship,” Napat said.
The funds will be used to purchase heavy machinery to assist with drilling wells and improving access to fresh water on Ambae.
Volcanic activity has affected Ambae several times, with increased activity reported in late August.
The donation also follows a recent ferry disaster in which two people died, while others were reported missing.
Napat said the disasters highlighted the need for continued support for affected communities.
“This kind of disaster is a constant reminder for us to protect and support our Ambae community,” he said.
The Chinese Embassy has been working with the Vanuatu Government to support recovery efforts.
