Typhoon Bavi speeds past Guam

SUPER Typhoon Bavi has dropped to a Category Four storm and is racing away from the Marianas, prompting the National Weather Service to lift its typhoon warnings early today.

Bavi’s center sat about 300 miles northwest of Guam with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph, moving west-northwest at 16 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

There have been no reports of fatalities.

That is down from the 175 mph winds recorded at the storm’s closest approach Monday, when its eye passed directly over Rota.

Brandon Aydlett, science and operations officer at the NWS Weather Forecast Office Guam, predicted only a gradual decline in the storm’s strength over the next several days.

“It is down to a 155 miles per hour right now, and it looks like it’s going to be fairly steady state and intensity, perhaps a slow weakening, as it continues farther westward and northwestward into the Philippine Sea,” Aydlett said.

He added that the latest Joint Typhoon Warning Center track had Bavi aimed toward Taiwan, with a possible pass just north of Taipei by the weekend.
