SOLOMON Islands media organisations are reporting a three-way battle for the prime minister’s job after Jeremiah Manele was forced out through a vote of no confidence last week.
Opposition Leader Matthew Wale has been nominated for the position of prime minister – a post which has eluded him throughout a long and stormy political career.
Wale entered politics in 2008 as Member for the Aoke-Langalanaga Constituency and was nominated for prime minister after the 2024 election, losing to Manele by 18 votes to 31. A fiery speaker, Wale has been severely critical of past leadership.
Police Minister Peter Agovaka has been in and out of parliament since 2006 when he was first elected from Central province. A colourful politician, he has been dismissed on separate occasions for possession of firearms and discussing matters of state with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The youngest nominee is Manasseh Maelanga, Member for East Malaita, who has served previously in the Home Affairs Ministry and the Provincial Government portfolio.
Solomon Islands’ parliament will convene on Friday to elect a prime minister. Intense lobbying is underway as the three candidates attempt to secure the majority in the 50-member house.
