A NEW shipping service between New Caledonia will be launched next month in an effort to boost trade between the islands.

The move follows a year of coordinated discussions between the two governments and the Compagnie Maritime des Îles (CMI), the operator of the Karaka.

“This is a major milestone for Vanuatu,” said Trade Minister Samon Samsen, highlighting the route’s potential to boost economic ties and improve the movement of goods.

The Karaka will play a key role in facilitating exports of major Vanuatu commodities such as kava, cocoa, and copra.

In return, it will enable the import of essential goods, machinery, and services to support the nation’s ongoing reconstruction and broader economic development.

Officials believe the new maritime link will unlock opportunities for increased investment and improved logistics. It is also expected to help expand value-added production, making Vanuatu a stronger trading partner within the Pacific region.

The service is a key part of Vanuatu’s broader strategy to build economic corridors and strengthen regional integration.

Since 2022, New Caledonia’s exports to Pacific Island Countries have been increasing, and Vanuatu, with whom they signed a free trade agreement in 2019, is a key destination market.
