FIJI’S Police Minister, Iowane Naivalurua, has labelled the country’s escalating drug problem a national emergency.

Speaking at the National Talanoa Session in Lami on Responding to Illicit Drugs in Fiji, Naivalurua revealed that almost 2400 drug-related cases were recorded in 2025.

Most offenders are aged between 18 and 35.

He warned that Fiji is exposed to transnational trafficking groups and pointed to the growing link between methamphetamine use and HIV transmission.

“This is not only a police issue, but it is also a public health problem.”

“Fiji is not Mexico, Fiji is not Colombia, nor any of the small islands in the Caribbean that these actors refer to, saying that we have lost the war.”

The national discussion on drug challenges continues this week.
