SEVERAL airlines worldwide have tightened regulations on the carriage of lithium batteries on aircraft following a series of overheating and fire incidents on board.

A portable power bank with a lithium battery has been identified as the potential cause of a fire that engulfed an Air Busan aircraft in South Korea in January 2025 while awaiting takeoff, according to local authorities.

Based on these findings, Fiji Airways has implemented safety measures for portable power banks on board, effective from January 19.

The new safety measures will apply to the carriage and use of portable power banks on all Fiji Airways and Fiji Link flights.

“Under the updated measures, portable power banks will no longer be permitted on board, and they will be prohibited in checked luggage,’’ the airline said in a statement.

“Passengers are advised to carry portable power banks in their cabin baggage and store them in the seat pocket, rather than in overhead compartments, so they remain easily accessible.”

Fiji Airways’ said safety was its top priority, and the decision followed a careful review of operational protocols regarding portable electronic accessories in line with the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations.

“By restricting the use of portable power banks, the airline aims to proactively manage potential risks and align with global aviation safety best practices,’’ the Fiji Airways statement said.

“Guests are encouraged to visit the Fiji Airways website for a full list of restricted items onboard.

“Information about these changes will be communicated to customers ahead of their flights, at check-in and at the terminal from (January 19) 2026.”
