Growing up in Sigatoka, one of Fiji’s key tourism hubs, gave Seruwaia Nainoca exposure on the impact the industry has on families and communities. From resorts to tour operations and hospitality services, tourism remains a vital source of employment in the region.
This insight led Seruwaia to choose a programme that blends commerce, human resource management, and tourism, equipping her with practical and transferable skills relevant to one of Fiji’s fastest-growing sectors.
The 18-year-old of Laselase Village in Sigatoka recently completed her application for Semester 1 studies at The University of the South Pacific (USP), marking a milestone shaped by family support, personal determination, and a clear vision for her future.
Accompanied by her mother to a recent pop-up enrolment booth, Seruwaia decided to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce, (Human Resource Management and Tourism) programme.
Her mother, who stood proudly beside her during the enrolment process, described the moment as one she had long hoped for. At 62, watching her only child take this important step was both reassuring and rewarding.
As Seruwaia prepares to begin her studies, she is eager to immerse herself in University life, develop leadership and communication skills, and gain industry knowledge that will allow her to contribute meaningfully to the tourism sector.
“I want to build a stable career, support my family, and be a role model for other young people in my village,” she said.
