VANUATU’S national carrier may soon resume international flights after a deal was signed with French aircraft manufacturer, Airbus.
In 2019, Vanuatu planned to buy four Airbus A220 but the agreement was impacted heavily by financial constraints, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequent political instability.
As a result, the airline cancelled delivery of its initial two new aircraft.
Prime Minister Jotham Napat confirmed yesterday that the agreement had been revived after successful talks with the manufacturer in France.
“The issue in terms of Airbus has been very positive,” Napat said.
He said Vanuatu did not lose any money despite earlier concerns that an estimated USD 17 million in pre-delivery payments had been lost after the initial deal collapsed.
Deputy PM Johnny Koanapo was responsible for discussions with Airbus.
The Airbus breakthrough will see Air Vanuatu resume its services to Australia and New Zealand where many ni-Vanuatu now work under a regional worker scheme.
