21-year-old Ajah Pritchard Lolo will be Vanuatu’s first female weightlifting athlete to compete at the Olympic Games in Paris this month.
Last month was a momentous one for Vanuatu as the nation celebrated World Olympic Day alongside the thrilling announcement that the 21- year-old will be taking part in that sport.
Ajah’s journey to the Olympics has been marked by several significant participations. Her impressive performances at the XVII Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands last year where she seized 3 silver medals and 1 bronze in the Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total events.
She also participated in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Senior World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in September 2023, the U23 Junior & Youth Oceania Weightlifting Championships in Apia in October 2023, and the recent North Island Weightlifting Championships in Auckland last month have culminated in her selection for the Paris Olympics to name a few.
The 21-year-old, who competes in the 81 kg weight category, shared her excitement and goals upon receiving the news. “I hope to make my country proud as I represent the nation in this world-renowned tournament,” she said, her voice filled with pride and emotion.
Despite feeling a bit nervous, she is determined to win medals and set a positive example for young girls.
Ajah’s weightlifting journey began just three years ago, but in that short time, she has achieved remarkable success, traveling internationally to showcase her skills and continually striving to be the best.
She aspires to be a trailblazer for women and girls in Vanuatu, encouraging them to pursue their dreams relentlessly.
“Dream big and never give up,” she advised.
Her father, David Lolo, expressed his profound gratitude and excitement upon hearing the news. “Ajah is a smart and young woman; I hope that she achieves everything she aims for,” he said, beaming with pride.
Ajah leaves for New Zealand early this month to get final preparations and warmed up before leaving for Paris just before the commencement of the global event on 26 July.
