Indo-Pacific Trumps Blue Pacific

Trump will clash with Forum members on climate policy.

On 20 January, US President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office. The US Republican leader has pledged engagement with island states, particularly in the northern Pacific. But at a time of heightened US-China strategic competition, Trump’s second term will be a rollercoaster for the islands’ region.

Given his track record and recent campaign statements, there are many Trump policies that will clash with the Forum’s Blue Pacific 2050 Strategy, especially on climate change.

Above all, any engagement with Forum member countries will be framed through the geopolitical contest with Beijing . . .
