The Pacific Islands region is home to the world’s largest tuna fishery worth in excess of US$4.5 billion each year.

For over half a century, the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) including Tokelau have generated national revenue from the licensing of fishing boats in their waters. In the 1970s and the 1980s, the total amount of licensing revenue equated to about 5% of the total value of the catch.
