RIOT police have been deployed in the Solomon Islands capital after tensions escalated following the election of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogovare.
A truck of armed riot police was deployed to Point Cruz at 1pm.
The unit has moved towards China Town where riots and lioting took place in 2006.
Police aerial patrols of Honiara resumed this hour after concerns over public safety. Political observers say public opinion on Sogovare’s election is divided.
The situation appears calm and police, reinforced by Corrections Service officers, continue to maintain law and order with checkpoints and mobile patrols.
Earlier today Sogovare defeated Matthew Wale in the prime ministerial election. Many shops remain closed and the sale of alcohol has been suspended.
