Arson in village after sorcery claims

POLICE reinforcements have been sent to East Makira in the Solomon Islands after homes, a fuel depot and kitchens, were burnt after suspicions of sorcery.

Food gardens were destroyed and 13 structures burned at Naharahau village, Wainoni, about an hour by flight from the capital, Honiara.

Police believe the incident was sparked by suspicions of sorcery following the death of a person. Relatives of the deceased have been blamed for the arson.

Officers rushed to the scene and took control of the situation. Tensions have decreased and attempts are being made to bring about reconciliation in the community.

Investigations into the sorcery claims and the burning have started  and additional police units deployed to the area.
