THE Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved $USD80 million in sovereign-backed financing for Fiji, joining the World Bank in a package worth $USD230 million.
This fast-disbursing finance package is designed to support the Pacific island nation’s economic resilience and climate preparedness.
The support, under AIIB’s Energy, Food Security and Economic Resilience Facility, will back Fiji’s reform programme as the government seeks to strengthen public finances, improve disaster readiness and create a more welcoming environment for private-sector growth.
The programme comes as Fiji faces pressure from global supply disruptions and climate-related shocks that can strain public spending and deter investment in essential services, the banks said.
By 2028, the reforms are expected to widen disaster-risk-reduction planning, improve public financial management for emergencies, expand access to regulated financial services for small and medium-sized firms, simplify rules for low-risk tourism businesses, increase digital payments and improve nutrition and physical activity outcomes for children.
“AIIB’s financing provides timely support for Fiji’s reform agenda while helping strengthen the systems that underpin long-term economic resilience,” AIIB Chief Investment Officer Kim-See Lim said.
“We remain committed to helping our members strengthen resilience, advance sustainable development and respond effectively to evolving global challenges,” Lim said.
Finance, Commerce and Business Development Minister Esrom Immanuel welcomed the financing and said it would complement the government’s fiscal and climate priorities.
“We sincerely thank the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for its continued confidence in Fiji and for this significant financing, which comes at an important time as we advance key reforms to strengthen our economy and build resilience against future shocks,” Immanuel said.
He said the package would support Fiji’s effort to build “a stronger, more inclusive and sustainable future” with development partners.
The programme aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050 and extends AIIB’s climate-focused policy-based financing support to the country.
