FORMER Attorney-General Graham Everett Leung has been elected president of the Fiji Law Society.
Leung is a senior lawyer with an extensive career in legal practice, public service, and diplomacy.
Earlier in his career, he was managing partner at Howards, a commercial law firm in Suva, and served as Chairman of the Electoral Commission.
He was an inaugural member of the newly established Human Rights Commission and also served as Judge Advocate of a Court Martial involving soldiers convicted in connection with the 2000 coup.
His professional career has extended beyond Fiji, including appointments and legal advisory roles in the Solomon Islands, Nauru and the Cook Islands, as well as work supporting constitutional development and human rights across the region.
Leung has been a prominent advocate for the rule of law, democratic governance, human rights, and judicial independence. Following the 2006 coup, he became an outspoken critic of military rule and undertook extensive international advocacy on issues concerning constitutionalism and the rule of law.
His regional and international contributions include service on the Council of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, senior leadership within LAWASIA, and involvement with the International Bar Association’s Pro Bono and Access to Justice Committee.
He has contributed to legal education and professional capacity-building, including work in international human rights law and support for constitutional reform in Kenya.
