THE Solomon Islands healthy ministry says it is closely monitoring an increase in flu-like illness across the country.
Surveillance data in late August showed there was an increase in influenza-like illness reported at surveillance sites in Honiara and Western Province.
Routine laboratory tests showed that most samples tested positive for Influenza A – a highly contagious virus which affects the nose, throat and lungs.
Influenza A spreads from person to person, most commonly through coughing and sneezing.
The public has been advised to: Wash hands with soap and water, cover mouth and nose when coughing, avoid close contact with others when unwell, stay home and rest, drink a lot of water, take Panadol (paracetamol) when suffering from fever, seek medical attention if the condition worsens.
