BALANCING pregnancy, final exams and the demands of university life was not easy for 26-year-old Simran Serana Tabanivono.
But the journey ended with a proud walk across the graduation stage.
Tabanivono graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Hotel Management, completing a journey that began in 2018 and included a two-year break from her studies.
Her interest in hotel management grew from travelling to resorts around Viti Levu and developing a love for Fiji’s tourism industry.
Along the way, however, employment led her to put university on hold.
“I found work and then, you know how you start making money and then you forget about
studies,” she said.
Tabanivono eventually returned after recognising the value of completing her degree, bringing valuable work experience with her.
Her final semester presented another challenge.
Pregnant while completing her last two units, she recalls being unable to complete a 15-mark essay question in the last paper.
“I didn’t know if I was going to pass or not. At the time, I was just really worried, but then I passed,” she said.
“It was hard, but I am grateful that I managed.”
Now a new mother, Tabanivono plans to return to the workforce, save money and pursue postgraduate studies, with ambitions of eventually completing a master’s degree and possibly a PhD.
Working on the revenue side of the hotel industry, Tabanivono said she was also encouraged to see more women entering areas traditionally dominated by men.
She described seeing many women graduate alongside her as a proud moment.
Tabanivono credited her mother, husband and extended family for helping her reach the milestone.
Her advice to others pursuing their education is simple.
“Take your time, but don’t take too long. Whatever you do, just make sure you be faithful and you finish it.”
