AT least one person is dead after a mine collapse on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.
Local media reported that 10 people had entered the premises illegally when a shaft collapsed around 2am on Tuesday.
Mine emergency crews were deployed to search and police crews were rushed from Honiara to the mine site.
Gold Ridge Mining Ltd (GRML) used excavator machines to help with the search and recovered one body which has been handed over to his family.
The mine has consistently faced problems with illegal miners entering the site and attempting to access gold.
Gold Ridge is a joint venture between Chinese, Australian, and local investors.
