Fiji Deputy PM quits over perjury charges

Fiji’s Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica.

FIJI’S Deputy Prime Minister, Manoa Kamikamica, has resigned from Cabinet after being charged with perjury.

Kamikamica was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that Kamikamica had resigned from Cabinet but would remain a Member of Parliament.

“Kamikamica will focus on clearing his name and has assured me of his unwavering support,” Rabuka said in a statement today.

The minister was in Australia to attend a business council meeting.

He is expected to return to Fiji tomorrow.

“I will be overseeing his portfolio responsibilities for the foreseeable future,” Rabuka said.

The charges against Kamikamica stem from a Commission of Inquiry which has been questioned by several political commentators.
