Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele is set to face a vote of no confidence in Parliament next Monday, December 16th, Clerk to the National Parliament, Jefferson Hallu has confirmed to SIBC news.
Hallu said the motion was formally put on notice last Thursday.
Hallu explained the motion goes to the heart of the principles on which parliamentary democracy is premised – majority rule.
“It’s a mechanism to check whether the government has the confidence of the House as the ruling government or not.”
The Solomon Islands government has indicated it intends to continue with the budget discussions for recurrent expenditure, with a consensus among party groups to push through the budget before addressing the no-confidence motion.
Hallu said that the motion will be dealt with on Monday whether the budget is passed or not.
SIBC understands the challenge has been brought by Member of Parliament for Central Honiara Constituency, Gordon Darcy Lilo, and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
