SPBD CENTRE OF THE Lakena Centre is the SPBD Centre of the Year 2021!
YEAR 2021 The award recognises SPBD centres who showed strong
organisational skills and full support of the SPBD programme.
Lakena Centre, Suva Situated near Nausori town, Lakena Centre has 15 members
with three groups involved in businesses such as baking,
tailoring, market vending and second-hand clothing.
Centre Chief, Roseline Nisha, describes 2021 as a “hard time”
for Lakena members because movement was restricted, and
meetings were done virtually due to COVID.
However, Nisha says her centre members remained resilient:
“I kept in contact with my members on our group page, where
I would regularly post announcements, create discussions
and we would pass on our savings or payments to our Centre
Secretary via M-PAiSA.”
“If someone was lagging behind (in their loan repayments),
we would try to help each other. As soon as COVID eased, we
started doing fundraising,” said Nisha.
The handicrafts entrepreneur is very thankful to SPBD for
improving the lives of Fijian women.
