SYDNEY, 04 NOVEMBER 2026 (FIJI VILLAGE/FBC SPORTS) —Sereana Naitokatoka will captain the Fiji Bulikula team for their historic semi-final match at the Rugby League World Cup against the Jillaroos.

Naitokatoka, who will be looking to inspire her teammates as Fiji prepare for a tough showdown against the defending rugby league powerhouse.

The starting 13 will feature Cassie Staples, Maria Paseka, Isabella Waterman, Sienna Laing, Taina Naividi, Luisa Yaranamua, Losana Lutu, Latisha Smythe, Lorren Ieli, Elizabeth Naleba, Talei Holmes and Leilani Ahsam.

Coming off the interchange bench are Tahila Marshall, Teaghan Hartigan, Ema Masi and Aliti Namoce.

Nanise Vakacavu, Naomi Tegu, Abigayle Sekitoga, Rory Muller and Ebony Laing have also been named among the reserves.

Bulikula will also look to eliminate costly errors and deliver a more complete performance as they take on Australia in their Rugby League World Cup semifinal clash.

Defensive coach Isaac Michael says errors around dummy-half were among the areas that let the side down, disrupting their attacking momentum and preventing them from producing the 70-minute performance they had targeted.

Michael admits the mistakes proved costly and says the team will focus on addressing them during the week as they prepare for a tougher test against the Jillaroos.

He says team selection will also depend on how players recover, with the coaching staff set to assess any injuries and minor knocks before naming their strongest available side.

Fijian Drua focus on consistency for 2027 season

NADI, 04 NOVEMBER 2026 (FIJI SUN)—Fijian Drua chief executive officer Jeff Miller says consistency in performance will be the club’s main focus in the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The club has recruited former Crusaders assistant coach Brad Mooar as head coach, alongside former England fullback Mike Catt as assistant coach.

Luke Vasu has been appointed head of athletic performance, while Dr Dale Thomas will work as the team’s clinical and performance psychologist.

“Clinical psychologist Dr Thomas was brought in by coach Mooar to work on the mental aspects of our game,” Miller said.

“If you look at the challenges that the Drua have had over time, we have only won twice overseas when we travel.”

Miller said the team would need to win more matches overseas to improve its chances of qualifying for the finals.

“On the field, when something doesn’t go our way or right, how do we actually have a trigger that switches that so that we can make positive decisions on the field to correct the action, so that we can move forward in a positive way?”

Miller said the new coaching team brought a blend of experience, including Mooar, who is from Christchurch, New Zealand, and has had coaching stints overseas.

The coaching panel also includes former Flying Fijians prop Campese Ma’afu as scrum coach, Ifereimi Rawaqa as forwards coach and Alando Soakai as defence coach.

“We’ve got coach Soakai as the new defensive coach,” Miller said.

“You’re playing without the ball for 40 minutes of the game. You want to have a focus on your defensive structures and how you defend, so that’s important.”

Miller said the team would have an interesting blend of experience, connection and mental training.

“If we can pull that off together, that won’t happen from day one, but I’m hoping progressively over the year it does.

“It will help us get consistency in performance.”…..PACNEWS

Fiji lifters eye Tahiti Games through Oceania championship

SUVA, 04 NOVEMBER 2026 (FIJI SUN)—Powerlifting Championship (ORPC) to gain exposure and experience ahead of next year’s Pacific Games in Tahiti.

This was the view of Fiji Powerlifting Federation (FPF) president Ryan Bale in an interview with SUNsports.

The ORPC began at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva and will conclude on Friday. Lifters from Fiji will compete against athletes from 10 other countries across the major categories.

“We all know the challenges that we go through here in the sport, and it’s always been encouraging for me to see the pas-sion that all our lifters bring to the platform every time they compete,” Bale said.

“I would encourage them to carry that momentum for-ward.”

Bale said the federation would continue supporting its lifters despite the daily challenges.

“We’re always behind them and trying our best to get them prepared and give them these core memories into the future.”

He said strong support from family and friends was vital to the lifters.

“It just drives the interest and membership in our sport and helps us to share this sport that we love so much.”

Bale said it had been 20 years since Fiji last hosted the ORPC.

“It’s an annual championship that happens every year and it’s been hosted from one Oceania country to another.”

“We’ve had a good turnout; this is the largest Fiji contingent so far.”

Bale confirmed that powerlifting legend and “Iron Lady” Senimili Turner would compete in the masters category.

“We’re very happy to have her, and now the new lifters are made up of sub-junior and junior lifters compared to the open lifters.”

“The future is bright for Fiji powerlifting.”

Bale said the lack of training facilities and funding were among the major challenges facing the federation.

“Our key challenge is just finding volunteers, and the accessibility of powerlifting gym facilities in the country holds us back.”

“I’d like to add the traditional obstacle of getting funding.”

He acknowledged the Fiji National Sports Commission for providing the federation’s largest grant to host the ORPC.

Bale urged the Fijian community to attend the event.

“If you’re not familiar with powerlifting, you’re more than welcome to get your first taste of the energy and passion in the room, not just from our Fiji team but from other countries as well.”….PACNEWS

Welepane targets OFC Pro League title with Bula FC

SUVA, 04 NOVEMBER 2036 (FIJI SUN)—Former AS Tiga Sport captain Josue Welepane is determined to earn his place at Bula FC and help the club challenge for the OFC Pro League title in 2027.

Despite his experience at regional and international level with AS Tiga Sport and New Caledonia, Welepane remains ground-ed and is focused on contributing to Bula FC’s success.

“My first goal is to honour the Bula FC jersey and give my very best to show my gratitude to the Tribe for choosing me,” Welepane said.

“For me, discipline is the first quality for a player. Bula FC has a lot of good players, which is why I will do my best for the Tribe, for the jersey.”

Welepane is looking forward to working with head coach Stéphane Auvray.

Bula FC finished third last season, while the Fiji national team won the MSP Cup during Auvray’s recent coaching period.

“Football will be my first occupation. It’s going to be different, but it’s also exciting to start this new chapter, a new life. I’m very proud of this development,” he said.

The centre-back was part of the New Caledonia squad that became the first Pacific island nation to reach the intercontinental play-offs for the FIFA Men’s World Cup.

New Caledonia lost 1-0 to Jamaica in the intercontinental play-off semi-final in Mexico in March.

Welepane was also part of the AS Tiga Sport side that played against Rewa FC in the OFC Champions League this year.

“We’ve been in Fiji in August 2026 for the OFC Champions League. It was my first time in Fiji and I really enjoyed the moments. I’m very happy to come back to Fiji,” he said.

Welepane said Bula FC’s ambitions, values and the opportunity to compete in the OFC Pro League inspired him to join the club.

“It’s a promising year, so we will have to do better than last year, which was a good one also. And why not win the championship ti-tle?”

He was grateful for the opportunity to con-tinue his football career in Fiji.

“Thank you for your support. Believe in us, and I will do my best for this new adventure.

“I hope this season is going to be great for all of us. We have to believe that nothing is impossible. ”…PACNEWS

Ponga back for NZ as Walsh wins Aussie fullback role

SYDNEY, 04 NOVEMBER 2026 (AAP)—Kayln Ponga and Reece Walsh are on track to resume their compelling rivalry after two huge coach calls ahead of the Rugby League World Cup semi-finals.

Ponga has been named on New Zealand’s extended bench for Saturday night’s do-or-die showdown with Tonga in Newcastle, just 22 days after breaking his forearm in a dazzling fullback duel with Walsh in the tournament opener.

And Walsh on Tuesday retained the Australian No.1 jumper ahead of James Tedesco for the Kangaroos’ semi-final against Samoa in Sydney on Sunday.

While young gun Keono Kini will again start as custodian at McDonald Jones Stadium, Ponga’s inclusion is a firm indication the Newcastle Knights superstar will return for the final should the Kiwis make it.

Coach Stacey Jones also selected hooker Phoenix Crossland among the Kiwis’ extended reserves as Australian Test coach Kevin Walters made the most significant move of his tenure by picking Walsh over Tedesco.

The selection dilemma has bubbled along through Australia’s three group-stage wins.

Tedesco entered the World Cup in exceptional form after helping the Sydney Roosters to the NRL premiership, while Walsh had spent the last two months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

But Walsh – the star of last year’s Ashes series – has done enough to win the backing of former Broncos coach Walters for the business end of the tournament.

Walsh and Ponga were both electrifying in Australia’s 24-22 win over New Zealand last month, before Walsh was man of the match with a hand in five tries in last Saturday’s 66-6 rout of the Cook Islands.

In other key Australian selections, Bradman Best has made the left centre spot his own by seeing off the challenge of South Sydney talisman Latrell Mitchell.

Tedesco and Mitchell are both part of a six-man bench that includes Canberra’s Ethan Strange and Cameron Murray for the likely Allianz Stadium sell-out.

Tom Dearden and Cameron Munster will line up together in the halves.

“Samoa were very impressive in a physical battle which had a lot of emotion last weekend against Tonga and we know we are in for a tough contest on Sunday night,” Walters said.

“It’s going to be a great occasion in front of a full house at Allianz Stadium, and we’ve got to meet the occasion with our best performance of the tournament.”

Samoa have made just one enforced change with Ronald Volkman replacing Chanel Harris-Tavita (hamstring) at five-eighth.

In the other semi-final, Tonga are unchanged while Crossland remains an option to feature for the first time since his four-match suspension for his leg-breaking tackle on Nathan Cleary in the NRL preliminary final.

The Newcastle hooker was officially elevated to New Zealand’s squad on Monday night after forward Jacob Laban was ruled out with injury.

Jones has named Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad on the wing as a result of Ronaldo Mulitalo’s one-game ban for a shoulder charge against Fiji….PACNEWS

Point of Law storms to a Melbourne Cup win after late surge past Royal Supremacy

MELBOURNE, 04 NOVEMBER 2026 (AP)–Ethan Brown steered Point Of Law to victory in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday after chasing down frontrunner Royal Supremacy down the stretch to win Australia’s greatest horse race.

Trainer Ciaron Maher made history in the 166-year-old race as the first to train a trifecta, with Zahrann 3 3/4-lengths behind in second place and Juja Kibo finishing third. Maher had seven horses among the 23 starters in the 3,200-meter (2-mile) Group 1 classic at Flemington.

It was just the sixth race start for Point of Law, a three-year-old colt formerly owned by King Charles III. An Australian consortium bought Point of Law after it won the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket in July.

“He’s just thrived,” Maher said of Point of Law. “All the owners, what a ride they’ve been on! It’s been a whirlwind, really, but I’m very proud of all the team.

“To get three horses in the first three spots … very proud.”

In its Australian debut, Point of Law won the Geelong Cup two weeks ago to earn a spot at the AUD$10.2 million  (US$7.1 million) Melbourne Cup, which is staged each year on the first Tuesday of November and is known locally as “the race that stops the nation.”

On a track that was rated soft after overnight rain, Point of Law was up to 20 lengths behind Royal Supremacy at stages but started closing the gap as the field rounded into the straight and surged to the finish ahead of Zahrann, Juja Kibo and Sons And Lovers. Royal Supremacy, also trained by Maher, faded to fifth.

It was a second Melbourne Cup victory for Maher, who trained 2022 winner Gold Trip, and the first for Brown, who was raised in the remote outback town of Alice Springs in Austraila’s Northern Territory and survived a near fatal fall in a race at Flemington in 2023 and underwent multiple surgeries.

The owners “put their faith in me, and they’ve spent a lot of money on this horse,” Brown said. “And for them to put me on it, it means the world.

“And to able to … win the Melbourne Cup — I’ve just got to pinch myself.”

Earlier Tuesday, trainer Chris Waller was fined 50,000 Australian dollars ($35,000) and Astrix, an eight-year-old New Zealand gelding, was scratched by stewards because medication was administered to the horse’s forelegs on the morning of the race.

The medication, penetrene, is used to relieve inflammation but is not allowed on race days.

“It’s a very basic liniment most stables use and I guess the pressure of race day, the person that looks after the horse, put it on his legs right in front of the security guard, nothing to hide,” Waller said. “As soon as it happened we knew there was a problem. “I’ve got to wear the responsibility, it’s my team.”….PACNEWS

Youth Olympic Games: Golden-point winner starts Kenya celebrations in Dakar

DAKAR, 04 NOVEMBER 2026 (WORLD RUGBY)—Kenya claimed gold in the women’s sevens competition at the Youth Summer Olympics in dramatic fashion, with Mitchelle Chemtai scoring the golden point in extra time to upset tournament favourites Australia in the final at Complexe Iba Mar Diop in Senegal.

The Aussies collected silver with Madagascar winning bronze, the first time the African nation has won an Olympic medal at any level.

The silver medallists had been the top seeds to win their first gold since 2014 in the women’s tournament but the Rising Lionesses showed heart, grit and determination in the final to come out with the gold.

The players jumped on each other in celebration as Chemtai laid in the in-goal area with her hands on her face in disbelief when the gold was secured.

Final: Chemtai’s extra-time winner seals gold in dramatic final

Kenya did not start the final as they would have wanted, as Darci Mackay scored early with an electric run down the left.

But Kenya kept knocking on the door and Zain Hido scored with a sniped attack through the breakdown to take the sides in at the break level at 5-5.

As the second half began, both teams’ defence held strong. Kenya looked like they were through but Layne Prince put in a try-saving tackle to keep Australia’s golden hopes alive.

Grace Buchanan put Australia back ahead – but Billie Backus received a yellow card to give Kenya a chance to get back into the game with the seconds ticking down, and they did exactly that. Josephine Kerubo darted over – but it was the conversion by Diana Wanjiku which took the final to a golden point, meaning whoever scores first wins the game.

Errors by Australia gave Kenya an attacking opportunity and they moved the ball left to right before Chemtai dotted down to seal Kenya’s first Youth Summer Olympics gold in the women’s tournament.

Several players on the squad first picked up a rugby ball just a year ago.

Australia and Madagascar top pools

The final round of the pool stage kicked off the second day of competition – and saw Australia and Madagascar top the pools after beating Kenya and Czechia respectively to both complete a clean-sweep of the round-robin phase which had kicked off 24 hours previously.

Those results set up semi-finals between Australia and Czechia, and Madagascar and Kenya.

Prince opened the scoring for Australia in the first semi-final, against Czechia. Her score was followed by a superb try by Mackay after a great bit of defence by Mia Shelley, who turned-over the ball just as Czechia was closing in on a promising attack.

Zuzana Svabova and Roza Bednarova hit back against the top seeds – but Australia led 14-10 at half-time. After weathering sustained early pressure from Czechia in the second half, Prince scored her second of the game to put Australia through to the gold medal match.

Kenya and Madagascar contested the second semi-final, with Evalyne Afande over for the first try of the knockout game. Kenya’s great start was blighted by an injury to Bridgit Lihanda, who had been a bright spark throughout the tournament. She was clapped as she was stretchered off of the pitch but she recovered for the gold medal final.

Michael Mmboga finished off a pacy effort to see Kenya 10-0 up at half-time. Madagascar got one back through Sariaka Raveloarisoa but Mmboga athletically finished to give Kenya a chance to play for the gold medal.

Bronze was settled as Madagascar defeated Czechia 26-10 with Soa Landy, Princia Ranaivoson and Raveloarisoa scoring to end up on the podium and sealed history for their country.

Before the medals were decided, places five to eight in the standings were cemented. China beat the USA to claim fifth with the Americans sixth, while Spain overcame Senegal to claim seventh with the hosts eighth.

The medal ceremony brought the curtain down on three thrilling days of rugby sevens action at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, with Kenya, Australia and Madagascar’s women’s sides following the French, South African and Argentine men’s teams in stepping up on to the medals podium…PACNEWS

Sereana Naitokatoka to captain Fiji Bulikula in historic semi-final clash

Jillaroos team named to face Fiji in semi-final

SYDNEY, 04 NOVEMBER 2026 (NRL)—Australian Jillaroos coach Jess Skinner has named a strong forward pack in preparation for their historic Rugby League World Cup 2026 Semi Final against Fiji Bulikula on Sunday.

Props Simaima Taufa and Millie Elliott return to the side after sitting out last week’s record win over Wales, while Tiana Penitani Gray is set to reprise her role in the second row after being sidelined with a foot complaint.

In the halves, Jocelyn Kelleher returns alongside halfback Tarryn Aiken reprising their successful partnership forged in the opening two wins of the Pool stages.

The Jillaroos haven’t faced a Fiji team in a Test match since 1998, with Skinner looking forward to the challenge presented by this year’s World Cup debutantes who have posted strong wins over the PNG Orchids and France and pushed powerhouses the Kiwi Ferns all the way in their opening match.

“I have been impressed with how Fiji have come into the tournament this year and displayed their style of football across the park,” Skinner said.

“As Jillaroos, we have been looking to build each game and know we will be well prepared to face Fiji on Sunday.”

Sereana Naitokatoka to captain Fiji Bulikula in historic semi-final clash

The Jillaroos game against Fiji will be followed by Australia taking on Samoa in the Men’s Semi Final.
