SOLOMON Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to an independent foreign policy, saying the priority is to advance national interests rather than become entangled in global geopolitical competition.
Speaking at a press conference following official visits to the United States and Japan, Wale said the Solomon Islands would continue to engage constructively with all partners while pursuing long-term economic growth.
“Friends to all, enemies to none. We’re a small country, we want to be a reliable partner to everybody,” Wale said.
The Prime Minister stressed that the country’s approach was based on maintaining balanced relationships with international partners, including China, while ensuring foreign engagement supports the aspirations of Solomon Islanders.
“China is an important trade partner, and it’s an important partner overall to us. We will continue to do our best and work hard to maintain that relationship. We’re not in the geopolitical game; we’re not interested. Let the big boys sort out the big stuff.”
Wale said his government remained focused on creating opportunities for its people through sound economic management and effective leadership rather than being distracted by strategic competition among larger powers.
He said the government’s vision is to strengthen the country’s economy over the next decade and position Solomon Islands to achieve middle-income status.
“We want to work for one thing—the best national interest of Solomon Islands,” he said.
“Over the next 10 to 15 years, with that kind of leadership direction, where finance is in the game in terms of economic policy, it is now realistic that we can become a middle-income country, and we will.”
The remarks affirm the government’s commitment to balanced partnerships while prioritising economic growth and the wellbeing of Solomon Islanders.
