TUVALU has called on the international community to unite behind countries on the frontline of climate change, following the adoption of the Taku Pakasoa Declaration at the Pacific Pre-COP31 meetings in Nadi.

Tuvalu’s Minister for Climate Change and Environment, Maina Vakafua Talia, delivered the message as the meetings concluded last week, with the declaration adopted on October 6.

“Overall, the declaration represents an unwavering commitment to continue to act on climate change and to call on the world to unite behind those on the frontlines of the climate crisis,” Talia said.

He said the declaration recognised the accelerating threats posed by ocean warming, acidification and sea-level rise, alongside the loss of glaciers and ice sheets.

These challenges threaten Tuvalu’s people, land and future, reinforcing the need for urgent global action to address climate change.

The declaration also recognises the leadership and advocacy of young people, Indigenous peoples and local communities, highlighting their contributions to climate decision-making and action for future generations.

Fiji’s Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya, stressed that Pre-COP31’s success would depend on whether discussions translated into decisions at COP31.

Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, also highlighted the importance of bringing Pacific priorities to the international agenda, particularly for countries already experiencing the impacts of climate change.

Talia urged other parties to join the declaration ahead of COP31, calling for greater cooperation to advance climate action.

“Join with us to advance global climate action and implementation to secure a better future for generations to come,” he said.

The declaration reinforces the Pacific’s call for meaningful international action that addresses the climate challenges facing vulnerable nations and communities.
