TUVALU has appointed Temukisa Auina Penehuro Hauma Governor-General – the first woman to hold the highest constitutional office in the country.
The inauguration was held ahead of the country’s 48th Independence Anniversary, adding special significance to a day of national celebration and reflection.
In accordance with the Constitution of Tuvalu, the Governor-General is required to take the Oath of Office and Oath of Allegiance before assuming the responsibilities of the office. The oaths were administered by the Acting Chief Justice of Tuvalu, Sir John Muria.
Prime Minister Feleti Penitala Teo congratulated Hauma and wished her well.

Hauma, 71, is from Vaitupu and Nanumaga and brings more than 30 years of experience in education, including 12 years as a headmistress. She holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of the South Pacific and a Master in Business Administration.
She has served as President of the Tuvalu National Council of Women
