PAPUA New Guinea police have rescued 39 Indonesians believed to be victims of human trafficking.
The 34 men and five women were found living in a three-bedroom flat waiting for jobs which did not exist.
Police said the Indonesians had received offers of employment but this turned out to be a scam.
Investigators are conducting their search for the traffickers and Police Commissioner David Manning said their would be no leniency for traffickers.
The Papua New Guinea government is collaborating with the Indonesian Embassy on this matter, making sure that safety, welfare, and dignity are still prioritized.
“It is so sad that this kind of behavior happens in our country,” said Manning.
This outcome marked a very important yet successful result. The human traffickers are operating between the Pacific and Southeast Asia.
