The Trump administration is considering auctioning leases for seabed mining off American Samoa, following a request from California-based firm Impossible Metals. The company applied on April 15 to mine critical minerals like nickel and cobalt from the ocean floor. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the move could boost US mineral security amid rising tensions with China. Environmental groups, however, warn that deep-sea mining could severely damage marine ecosystems.
