LEARN COMMON METEOROLOGICAL WORDS IN
OCEANIA SIGN
Languages pose a barrier to communicate early warnings. Countries around the world use
different signs to interpret words in their own language for the deaf and hard of hearing, and in
some situations, even for foreigners. Similarly, in the Pacific, sign language varies from country
to country.
To improve how early warning messages are delivered to everyone in the Pacific, a glossary of
commonly used meteorological terms has been translated into Oceania Sign and instructional
videos developed as a teaching resource to support national meteorological services, disaster
management offices, practitioners in Disaster Risk Reduction to increase the awareness of a
common language that can be used to better prepare for hazards.
This is an initiative supported by the European Union-funded Climate Services and Related
Applications (ClimSA) Programme. ClimSA Pacific is working to improve the Climate Information
Services value chain with technical and financial assistance, infrastructure and capacity building.
