UN Secretary-General in Fiji next week

United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres is visiting Fiji

next week as part of a tour which will also take him to Tuvalu,
Vanuatu and New Zealand.
It is Guterres’ first visit to the Pacific.

He is coming to discuss preparations for the UNSG's climate action
summit in September later this year, and the leadership role the
Pacific can take on issues such as climate change mitigation. Pacific
Islands Forum leaders will converge on Suva for the first time since
2015 to meet Guterres for a Talanoa session on climate change

The Secretary-General will also meet Fiji’s President and senior
government and non-government officials.

Guterres took office as UN Secretary-General in January 2017 and is a
former UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He hails from Portugal,
where he spent more than 20 years in government and public service.
